Paris was ugly again Christmas week. You and I have had that little chat before about Paris being ugly in the winter. Cold rain, ugly skies, but no snow -- you don't even want to leave the hotel room on Christmas Day. The photos below were taken 10 days earlier on December 15 between rain storms by Mr. Swede on his way to a china shop across from the Louvre as there is a certain someone on Santa Swede's list who likes Astier de Villatte dishes.
He stopped to take these photos of a statue by Paul Landowski HERE in the Tuileries Garden called Les Fils de Cain, or translated, The Sons of Cain.
I could not find much online about this statue. I do like the building behind though. Part of the Louvre complex.
I don't know about you, but when I look at artwork like this sculpture, I have more questions than there are answers. Like, I want to know why is the one guy naked? Why is his hand above his head? Don't they own shoes? Why does the guy in the middle have a skull? Is it an ox? And, what is the guy on the right looking at? Why is he wearing a backless leather apron? Is Landowski making a religious point? He did other religious statues, so is this inside or outside The Garden of Eden? What is the message? Why is this important?
This says Landowski made this in 1906 but it wasn't placed in the Tuileries until 1985. So where had it been during those years?
The backside. Comment withheld on the cheeks. Smile.
What was the purpose of doing this statue? Who ordered it? Who paid for it? Too many questions.
